How do I join the church?
Just let us know you'd like to become a church member! Dr. Biggs, our senior minister, will be happy to help you. You can call him at 583-5181. Most people join at the close of a Sunday morning worship service, but other options are available if that doesn’t work for you.
If you’ve never been baptized, one of our ministers will be happy to baptize you. If you’ve ever been baptized in the Christian faith we will not re-baptize you, but will simply ask a few questions about your beliefs and your desire to be a member here. Then we'll be happy to welcome you into this congregation.
What classes are available for children and youth?
Age-appropriate Sunday School classes are available at 9:40 every Sunday morning for all children and youth, infants through high school seniors. Extended Sunday School is also offered for infants through first graders during the 11:00 worship service, and 4-year-olds through first graders participate in a children’s worship service at 11:15 that is geared just for them.
Boston Avenue is so BIG. How do I find a Sunday School class?
There are a number of adult classes available, and they offer a wide range of options – small or large, lecture or discussion-oriented, etc.. One of our ministers or greeters will be happy to help you find one that’s right for you. Ministers are easy to spot on Sunday mornings because they all wear black robes. A list of classes, with a brief description and location of each, is also available in the information booths around the church. If you need help, feel free to ask anyone you see.
Can I participate in communion if I’m not a member?
Communion in the United Methodist Church is open to all who want to participate. We believe that everyone should have that opportunity to be claimed and changed by God.
How can I get a tour of the building?
Guided tours are offered each Sunday morning immediately following the 11:00 worship service, beginning in the church library. Weekday tours can be arranged by calling the church office, 583-5181.
What Bible study opportunities are available?
There are a number of opportunities available! Dr. Biggs teaches a Bible study class every Sunday morning from 9:40-10:40 in the santuary, and everyone is welcome. He'll be teaching on the book of Daniel and its prophecies about the "end times" during July.
Disciple Bible Study classes meet during the school year, and are scheduled at various times throughout the week. Disciple I is a 34-week study that gives an overview of the Bible, then courses II, III, and IV offer more in-depth studies of specific books of the Bible. The most recent Disciple study, Jesus in the Gospels, is also available, as is Christian Believer. This fall there will also be shorter, 8-week Bible studies produced by those who produced the Disciple Bible Study series.
The School of Continuing Education, which meets for five weeks each spring and fall, includes various Bible study classes, and other studies are held at various times. Our United Methodist Women also offer annual studies through their small groups.
How can I become involved in the church?
Just let us know how you’d like to be involved! Interest surveys are available that you can fill out to tell us your areas of interest and expertise, or you can call the church office, 583-5181, and tell them you’d like to be involved in a certain area. They’ll connect you with someone who works with that area.
