Japan Relief

Boston Avenue is collecting money to donate to the United Methodist Committee on Relief to help victims as they recover from the devasting earthquake and tsunami.

BAUMC Special Mission Projects

Throughout the year, various Boston Avenue groups sponsor special mission projects. These include:

  • Lights On for Cookson in February, which invites church members to help the Cookson Hills Mission Center pay its utility bills and ongoing operating expenses.
  • July Mission Emphasis Month, when a different ministry or agency is highlighted each Sunday and church members are invited to help meet their needs.
  • Cookson Hills Christmas Store during October, when new items are collected so that about 300 poverty-level families can pay a token amount, based on their income, to “shop” for gifts for their children and loved ones.
  • Downtown for Good in October, where members of the church break into small groups to complete service projects around downtown and midtown Tulsa.
  • Other special projects are sponsored as the church sees a need to be met.

Downtown for Good

Downtown for Good
Downtown for Good is a great day of mission for Boston Avenue! Volunteers of all ages, toddlers through adults, are encouraged to participate. Held on a Saturday in October, participants meet at the church to receive their assignments and divide into teams that fan out across downtown and midtown Tulsa to help those in need. Leaders are assigned to a number of different work projects to distribute supplies and offer guidance. A wide assortment of service projects are available: from interior and exterior painting, building, doing yardwork, picking up trash, spreading rock, and removing fallen trees to less strenuous projects like delivering groceries or sorting toys, clothing, and food... plus anything else that needs doing!

Donations for Aid in Japan

All who would like to help victims of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan are invited to send your donation to the church. Several gifts have already been received. All donations will be forwarded to our United Methodist Committee on Relief, which is already there providing help. Below are updates from the United Methodist News Service:

New York, NY, March 14, 2011—United Methodist response to the earthquake and tsunami in Japan will be closely coordinated with churches and church-related agencies in that country, which continues to reel as the death toll continues to rise. The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) is serving as the denomination’s conduit for financial contributions. One hundred percent of every gift goes to the designated cause.
“Our emergency relief and long-term rehabilitation in Japan will involve our long-term mission partners with whom many of our missionaries .. already work,” said Thomas Kemper, general secretary of the General Board of Global Ministries (GBGM), of which UMCOR is a part. “Japan is a highly developed nation, and we will depend heavily on our partners to help us focus our resources in areas of greatest need.”
All United Methodist mission personnel, missionaries, and volunteers were accounted for on the morning of March 13, but questions lingered over the possible implications of radiation from damaged nuclear reactors. Global Ministries gave all personnel permission to evacuate at their own choice. The agency has a total of almost 20 related professionals in Japan.
Reports indicate that a new Wesley Center in Tokyo, related to United Methodist Women, was not damaged and is able to care for a group of now homeless people. However, the Asian Rural Institute, a major mission partner north of Tokyo, sustained considerable damage.
“UMCOR is closely monitoring the unfolding situation in the Pacific,” said Melissa Crutchfield, UMCOR executive for International Disaster Response. “We’re in contact with our partners in the region, mindful of the still developing emergency in Japan.”
